MFO Change of Command

Major General Denis Thompson of Canada assumed command today of the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai from Major General Warren Whiting of New Zealand.

The ceremony was presided over by MFO Director General, Ambassador David M. Satterfield, with dignitaries in attendance from both Parties to the Treaty of Peace, Egypt and Israel, and from Canada and New Zealand. Representatives from the Italian, Dutch and U.S. Embassies also attended.

Ambassador Satterfield thanked Major General Whiting for his service to the MFO over the past four years, one of the most challenging periods since the inception of the MFO, which he carried out with great distinction and for which he was awarded the MFO Distinguished Service for Peace Award. Ambassador Satterfield also welcomed Major General Thompson to the MFO and expressed great confidence in his ability to maintain the professionalism, cohesion and success of the Force.

Major General Thompson will serve as the MFO Force Commander for two years. His biography may be viewed here.
