MFO Change of Command

Major General Evan Williams of New Zealand assumed command of the Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai from Major General Simon Stuart of Australia on 1 December 2019.

The ceremony was presided over by the MFO’s Director General, Ambassador R. Stephen Beecroft, with dignitaries in attendance from Egypt and Israel, the Parties to the Treaty of Peace, as well as from MFO Supporting States, including representatives from New Zealand and Australia.

During the Change of Command Ceremony, Ambassador Beecroft thanked Major General Stuart for his service to the MFO since March 2017 and presented him with the MFO’s Distinguished Service for Peace Award, the MFO’s highest honor. It was awarded to Major General Stuart for his achievements in reorganizing the MFO’s structure and processes in Sinai, strengthening its crucial relationships with the Treaty Parties, and increasing consultation with regional UN organizations. He was also praised for superior leadership in driving change, encouraging engagement, ensuring safety of operations, and inspiring support.

Ambassador Beecroft also warmly welcomed General Williams and his wife, Kristin, to the MFO and expressed great confidence in General Williams’ leadership as the MFO’s thirteenth Force Commander.

In addition to New Zealand and Australia, previous MFO Force Commanders have come from Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, and Norway.
