UK Temporary Deployment of Military Personnel

As part of the United Kingdom’s significant ongoing support of the MFO mission, which currently includes an annual financial contribution and provision of a Royal Engineer seconded to the Force Commander’s staff, the Ministry of Defence has agreed to deploy approximately 40 British Army Royal Engineers and equipment to support the MFO in carrying out urgently needed force protection work at its North Camp in the Sinai.

The engineers arrived on 8 March 2015 and will serve with the MFO for approximately 12 weeks. The MFO is very grateful for this timely show of support by the Ministry of Defence and Her Majesty’s Government and the provision of manpower and equipment beyond what is available to the Force’s Engineering Office.

Additional Japanese Funding

A Japan-Egypt Joint Statement (click here for full text), issued in connection with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s official visit to Egypt on 16-17 January 2015, made reference in its paragraph 36 to the MFO in the following terms:

"36. President El-Sisi expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Abe's intention to strengthen support for the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) deployed in the Sinai Peninsula. Prime Minister Abe highly appreciated Egypt's crucial role in the Middle East peace process. Prime Minister Abe announced his intention to extend, with the approval of the Diet, contribution amounting to US $1.04 million to MFO (Multinational Force and Observers)."

Japan is the MFO’s oldest Donor State, and has provided an annual contribution since MFO Fiscal Year (FY) 1989. On 3 March 2015, the MFO received official notification of completion of the process of approval for this generous additional contribution in MFO FY 2015 (Japanese FY 2014). This timely and substantial additional funding will be used exclusively for urgent force protection and communications projects proposed by the MFO.

The MFO is very grateful for Japan’s sustained support for our mission of peace.

Temporary Dutch Deployment Concludes

The temporary deployment of four Dutch staff officers, which began on 14 January 2013, concluded on 1 February 2015.

The MFO greatly appreciates the specialized expertise of the personnel from the Netherlands Royal Maréchaussée who provided technical support in these four positions, two in the area of force protection and two in policing, throughout the period of this temporary deployment.

The Netherlands remains fully engaged in the MFO mission of peace as a key Donor State; a role it took on starting in MFO Fiscal Year 2006.
