MFO Plenary Meeting -- 2022

The MFO was honored to hold its first in-person plenary meeting since 2019 in Rome on June 23, 2022. Due to COVID, it was not possible to arrange these meetings in 2020 and 2021.

Representatives from twenty MFO Supporting States participated, including delegations from Egypt, Israel, and the United States.  The MFO’s Director General, Ambassador R. Stephen Beecroft, and Force Commander, MG Evan Williams (New Zealand), provided Supporting State Representatives with an update on the state of the MFO mission, including current and future operations, finances, actions taken to protect our personnel and promote diversity, and our initiatives to expand dialogue between the Treaty Parties, Egypt and Israel, and increase their cooperation.

Ambassador Beecroft thanked delegates for “understanding the value of peace. Today, the peace between Egypt and Israel endures and prospers because their leaders and peoples have chosen to pursue peace and because governments and peoples around the world ably and unstintingly support them.”

Major General Alaa Kassem, Chief, of Egypt’s Liaison Agency with International Organizations (LAWIO) observed that “the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty has become an international and regional icon of fruitful cooperation, combined effort, credible support, and responsible contribution.”

Brigadier General Efraim Defrin, Chief, of the Israeli Defense Force’s International Cooperation Division remarked that “[t]hirteen countries graciously grant their gifted men and women to serve and assist us. We cannot thank our international partners enough for identifying the importance of lsraeli-Egyptian peace for the region and for committing to support and protect it.”

At the end of the meeting, Ambassador Beecroft presented Egyptian MG Samer Kamal with the MFO’s highest award, the Distinguished Service for Peace Award, for his commitment to the MFO mission and extraordinary contributions to international peace throughout his career with LAWIO spanning the period January 1, 2001 to January 8, 2021.
