An original Troop-Contributing Nation, the United Kingdom served with the MFO from 1982 to 1992 providing a headquarters company and officers amounting to approximately 35 personnel. From August 2012 to September 2020, the United Kingdom returned to the MFO family of Supporting States as a Donor.
In June 2014, the United Kingdom commenced providing the MFO with an Engineering Officer (Major) who worked in the Plans Section. The decision to provide personnel again to the MFO is a visible sign of the United Kingdom’s strong commitment to the MFO, international security, and peacekeeping. In the Spring of 2015, the United Kingdom temporarily deployed a squadron of Royal Engineers for a period of three months to assist with force protection works at Forward Operating Base North. In February 2016, a second United Kingdom contingent member was added to fill a position (Sergeant) in the Force Protection Section.
In 2019, the United Kingdom agreed to provide a Lieutenant Colonel to fill the Chief, Force Protection position as opposed to the Major position in the Plans section. Since resuming participation in the MFO, the United Kingdom has generously waived the payment of soldier allowances.
