In Memoriam: Former MFO Force Commanders Tellefsen (Norway) and Meating (Canada)

The MFO was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Major General Tryggve Tellefsen of Norway, on 27 December 2025, and of Major General Robert Meating of Canada, on 01 January 2026.

Major General Tellefsen served as MFO Force Commander from April 1997 to March 2001. He was the third MFO Force Commander from Norway. Prior to his service as Force Commander, General Tellefsen had served as the MFO’s Chief of Operations from 1987 to 1988.

Throughout his term as Force Commander, he worked ceaselessly to strengthen and improve the liaison system between the Treaty Parties, Egypt and Israel, helping to ensure it remained a vital tool for promoting effective communications, anticipating challenges, and cooperative problem-solving. In addition, Major General Tellefsen worked selflessly on behalf of the MFO, to maintain support for the mission internationally.

Major General Robert Meating served as the MFO Force Commander from March 2001 through March 2004. He was the first MFO Force Commander from Canada. His tenure coincided with a period of significant regional volatility leading to a sustained emphasis on force protection and improved safety to ensure the effectiveness and continuity of the mission. He also managed a major rebalancing of military manpower and support functions at the Force in Sinai while keeping core mission tasks on track.

Both Generals are remembered for their dedicated service to the MFO and for strengthening the organization’s ability to support peace and build confidence between Egypt and Israel.

On this sad occasion, the MFO extends its condolences to both Generals’ families and loved ones, and remembers with gratitude their enduring contributions to peace, to the MFO, and to all who had the privilege to serve with them.
