In Memoriam: Former President Jimmy Carter

It is with great sadness that the MFO notes the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, an indefatigable force for peace and a global humanitarian. There are few who have so solidly concentrated their own individual efforts on making this world a better place for all.

40th Anniversary of Protocol Signing

August 3, 2021, marks the 40th anniversary of the creation of the MFO with the signing of the Protocol to the Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel. The Protocol established the overall structure, authorities, and responsibilities of the MFO, enabling us to begin our mission. The accompanying photos show the first raising of the MFO flag in Sinai in April 1982.

Since our beginning, we have unwaveringly carried out our mission under the Treaty of Peace and its Protocol. To this end, we have monitored security compliance with the Treaty, enabled the development of relations between the Treaty Parties, and seized every opportunity to deepen and broaden peace.

The peace between Egypt and Israel is a fundamental step toward regional stability and has provided the basis of subsequent and ongoing reconciliations between Israel and its neighbors, and the MFO is proud to have contributed to that historic process.

The success of our mission stems directly from the support and assistance of our Supporting States, and we thank them for their generous commitments of forces and funds. Vital to our success are the many men and women, military and civilian, who have served as part of the MFO. They have all sacrificed to serve the cause of peace, and some have given their lives. We thank them all for their commitment and dedication.

While the MFO’s mission has not changed, how we carry out our duties has evolved with time, in tune with our operating environment and capabilities. Most importantly, we remain as committed, constructive, and relevant to the momentous and essential peace between Egypt and Israel as we were at our beginning.

The MFO thanks MAJ G.A. Redding, who served with the MFO in the Sinai when it first commenced operations in 1982, for kindly sharing his journal and photographs, some of which we have included here.
