Honoring Seven Who Gave Their Lives in the Service of Peace

On 12 November 2021, the MFO marked the one-year anniversary of the death of seven of its members in a helicopter crash on Tiran Island off the coast of Sinai.

The MFO remembered the service and sacrifice of its brave colleagues in ceremonies at South Camp in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The day began with a touching dawn observance in which MFO members paid their respects and shared a moment of silence. Later that morning Representatives from the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Israel, and the United States joined the MFO in a commemoration ceremony and unveiling of a memorial. Staff Sergeant Jarelle Turner, the lone survivor of the crash, and his wife participated in the events, and families and friends of the seven soldiers joined virtually from the Czech Republic, France, and the United States.

In his remarks at the ceremony, MFO Director General Stephen Beecroft told those gathered that the MFO’s seven fallen colleagues “valued service above self, honorably fulfilled their duty to country, and gave their lives in the most noble of causes – peace. They were an essential part of a mission that for 40 years has successfully ensured peace between two once bitter enemies.”

During the event broadcast MFO Force Commander, MG Evan Williams, sent the following message to the families and friends of those who were lost: “I assure you that the sacrifice of your loved ones, our fallen angels will not be wasted. We will continue to serve in their honour as Servants of Peace, in the preservation of peace. They may be gone, but to me, to us as a Force, they will be Forever in Flight.”

MFO Chief of Staff, Colonel Matthew Archambault remarked, “Our seven departed souls committed themselves to this mission and there is no more fitting tribute we can pay to their memory, to the Treaty Parties for whom we serve and the troop contributing nations who invest in this mission with their most precious treasure – their sons and daughters.”

The MFO will always remember the sacrifice and carry on the service of Chief Warrant Officer Michaela Ticha of the Czech Republic, Colonel Sébastien Botta of France, and Captain Seth Vande Kamp, Chief Warrant Officer Dallas Garza, Chief Warrant Officer Marwan Ghabour, Staff Sergeant Kyle McKee, and Sergeant Jeremy Sherman of the United States.
