Japan-funded Armored Bus Welcomed into MFO Fleet

The MFO officially inducted a new armored bus, funded by the Government of Japan, into our vehicle fleet on 22 July 2024. In attendance at the ceremony held at our South Camp was the Ambassador of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Oka Hiroshi. He was accompanied by the MFO’s Force Commander, Major General Michael Garraway, and our Director General’s Representative in Cairo, Mr. Brad Lynch.

MFO Force Commander Change of Command

Major General Simon Stuart of Australia assumed command today of the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai from Major General Denis Thompson of Canada.

The ceremony was presided over by the MFO’s Director General, Ambassador David M. Satterfield, with dignitaries in attendance from both Parties to the Treaty of Peace, including MG Ossama Abdelaziz, Chief of the Egyptian Liaison Agency with International Organizations and MG Yair Golan, Deputy Chief of the Israel Defense Force General Staff.  In addition, there were representatives from Australia, Canada and other MFO Supporting States.   


Ambassador Satterfield thanked Major General Thompson for his service to the MFO during the past three years and presented him with the MFO’s Distinguished Service for Peace Award, the highest honor available from the MFO.  It was awarded to Major General Thompson for his service during a period of extraordinary challenges in which he led the Force safely and effectively while accomplishing the MFO’s Treaty Mission.  He was also praised for his role in planning and executing the rebalancing of Force personnel and the reconfiguration of the MFO to a more modern, efficient and secure multinational formation.  


Major General Stuart was warmly welcomed to the MFO by Ambassador Satterfield who expressed great confidence in his ability to maintain the professionalism, cohesion and success of the Force.  


Major General Stuart will serve as the MFO Force Commander for two years. His biography may be viewed here.  


In addition to Australia and Canada, previous MFO Force Commanders have come from Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Norway.
