Improving Readiness Through Training

Training within the MFO is designed to build quick responses, refine procedures, and foster team cohesion. This focus was on display during a recent joint exercise between the Aviation Company (AVCO) and Medical Company (MEDCO).

Recent updates to the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter’s fuel tank system have extended range and efficiency but introduced new spatial and procedural challenges for medical crews during litter transfers. To address this, AVCO and MEDCO jointly conducted load training to ensure personnel are fully prepared to respond to medical emergencies under these updated conditions.

Understanding Load Training

In helicopter-based medical operations, load training ensures patients are transferred to and from helicopters safely. The UH-60 Black Hawk, provided by the U.S. Army, is central to medical evacuation missions. This training prepares medical teams to transfer under realistic conditions.

There are two types of load training:

1. Cold Load Training: Conducted with the helicopter shut down, which is ideal for initial training.

2. Hot Load Training: Performed with rotors turning and engines running, simulating emergencies where speed and precision are critical.

During the exercise, AVCO and MEDCO practiced both types of training, focusing on structural changes, rotor awareness, and securing patients on litters during extractions. These drills build confidence, ensure seamless coordination between flight crews and medical teams, reinforce technical proficiency, and strengthen collaboration. By working together in realistic and challenging conditions, both units ensure they remain ready to respond quickly and safely to medical emergencies across the Sinai.

AVCO and MEDCO: Mission-Critical Roles

AVCO provides rotary- and fixed-wing aviation support to the MFO, operating eight UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and a C-12 Huron aircraft. These assets support Civilian Observer Unit reconnaissance and verification, Treaty Party meetings, VIP transport, resupply, command and control, training, visitor orientation, and search and rescue. AVCO maintains round-the-clock aerial medical evacuation capabilities and handles its own maintenance in Sinai.

MEDCO offers a range of medical services to MFO personnel, including medical, dental, veterinary, physical therapy, behavioral health, and preventive medicine. Dispensaries operate at both camps, with flight medical personnel available for evacuations. Behind the scenes, MEDCO’s medical logistics team maintains a steady supply of materials throughout the Sinai, while the medical maintenance team keeps life-saving equipment fully operational, ensuring continuous support for all medical operations.
