MFO Commemorates 40 Years of Peacekeeping in Sinai

On April 25, 1982, the date specified in the Treaty of Peace, representatives of Egypt, Israel, and the MFO met at North Camp. The red, white, and black banner of the Arab Republic of Egypt was raised, signaling the return of Sinai to Egyptian sovereignty. At that moment, the MFO took up its mission of peace.

On Thursday, April 28, 2022, the MFO commemorated 40 years of peacekeeping in a ceremony held at South Camp in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The ceremony was attended by our dedicated soldiers and civilians in Sinai as well as the Egyptian Ambassador to Israel, H.E. Khaled Azmi, the Israeli Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Amira Oron, the Chiefs of the Egyptian and Israeli Liaison Agencies, and Representatives from the MFO’s offices in Rome, Cairo, and Tel Aviv. The event concluded with a laying of wreaths in honor of our Fallen Servants of Peace.

Commenting on the importance of the day, Major General Evan Williams (NZ), MFO Force Commander, remarked that “it gives us much cause to reflect on our history, to celebrate the contributions of those who came before us, and to remember the lives lived and lost in the pursuit of peace.”

In her remarks, Ms. Candace Putnam, MFO Deputy Director General, told those gathered that ”a great deal has changed since the MFO flag was first raised in the Sinai, but we continue to take pride in our mission and our ability to adapt to changing circumstances as we guarantee the peace and enhance Israeli-Egyptian relations.”
