Japan-funded Armored Bus Welcomed into MFO Fleet

The MFO officially inducted a new armored bus, funded by the Government of Japan, into our vehicle fleet on 22 July 2024. In attendance at the ceremony held at our South Camp was the Ambassador of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Oka Hiroshi. He was accompanied by the MFO’s Force Commander, Major General Michael Garraway, and our Director General’s Representative in Cairo, Mr. Brad Lynch.

MFO Opens Newly Upgraded Air Terminal Funded by Japan

At a ceremony attended by His Excellency, Oka Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, at the Sharm El Sheikh International Airport on 21 February 2022, the MFO marked the opening of its newly upgraded Air Terminal and the successful relocation of its Remote Site 5 to the Air Terminal.

The relocation and upgrade of the combined facility were possible by a generous financial contribution from the Government of Japan and will help ensure that the MFO has the proper infrastructure and resources to meet current and future needs and successfully carry out its mission in Sinai on behalf of Egypt and Israel.


Ambassador Oka congratulated the MFO, saying, “In light of the importance of the project, I am very pleased that Japan was able to contribute funding, and I would like to convey my deepest appreciation for the efforts made by the MFO, the South Sinai Governorate, and all others who made this project possible". In his remarks,  Major General Evan Williams of New Zealand, the MFO’s Force Commander, highlighted the significance of Japan’s investment in the security and well-being of MFO personnel and the stability and continuity of the MFO’s mission.

 

Joining Ambassador Oka and Major General Williams for the occasion were Major General Khaled Fouda, South Sinai Governor; Brigadier General Hossam Abd El Razek, Deputy Chief of Egypt’s Liaison Agency with International Organizations (LAWIO); Colonel Ahmed Safaa of LAWIO Sharm; Mr. Brad Lynch, the MFO Director General’s Representative in Cairo; and representatives from the Sharm El Sheikh International Airport.

 

The MFO, along with Egypt and Israel, is grateful for Japan’s many contributions to peace and stability in the region and its long-standing support of the MFO’s mission. Japan is the MFO’s first Donor State and has provided generous funding to the MFO since 1988.
