COU Conducts its 1000th Verification Mission in the Sinai (V-1000)

From February 11 to 15, 2024, the MFO’s Civilian Observer Unit (COU) conducted its 1,000th verification mission (V-1000). This milestone highlights the MFO’s and the COU’s ongoing commitment to long-lasting peace in the region.

The Chief of the COU, Mr. Sean Osner stated, “V-1000 comes at a time when regional peace and stability faces significant challenges. We should all remember that commitment to long-lasting peace enables human progress and prosperity for future generations.”

Since the establishment of the MFO in 1982, the COU has verified and reported on the security arrangements of the Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel. During verification missions, Observers travel throughout the four designated Treaty zones – three in Sinai and one in Israel – accompanied by host nation Liaison Officers to verify Treaty compliance. These missions are carried out mostly by ground in all-terrain vehicles but also by air in rotary-wing aircraft with teams often operating in harsh terrain regardless of the weather conditions.

The successful completion of the COU’s 1000th verification mission is a testament to the Unit’s unwavering dedication to support peace between Egypt and Israel.

We congratulate and thank our current and past Observers who are a vital part of the MFO’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East!
