Fiji’s President Visits MFO Sinai

The Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai was honored to welcome the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, to the MFO’s South Camp from 8 to 11 August 2022. The President was accompanied by the First Lady, Her Excellency Vilomena Kumete Katonivere, the Fijian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Ambassador Katonitabua, and Major General Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

The visit centered on the important responsibilities undertaken by the Fijian Contingent in support of the MFO mission including force protection operations where Fijian soldiers play a vital role in providing security at the MFO’s South Camp and to our Civilian Observer Unit when conducting ground verification missions. Additionally, Fijian personnel are appointed to key staff positions where they sustain MFO operations. President Katonivere was also briefed on the MFO’s Observe, Verify, and Report mission and our ongoing commitment and efforts to facilitate engagement and cooperation between Egypt and Israel.

The Fijian contingent warmly welcomed their Head of State and demonstrated their skills in military drill, martial arts, and traditional singing and dancing.

On 10 August 2022, the MFO’s Force Commander, Major General Williams, presented contingent members with their MFO medals in front of the visiting dignitaries. Contingent members also had the pleasure of receiving Fijian General Service Medals from Major General Kalouniwai in recognition of their time spent serving in the Sinai.
