MFO Participates in World War I and II Commemorative Events

Delegates from the MFO participated in commemorative events honoring the brave men and women who fought in battles at El Alamein, Egypt, and Beersheba, Israel, during the World Wars.

On Saturday, 23 October 2021, a delegation of 31 MFO members from the Australian, Canadian, Italian, and New Zealand contingents attended the commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of the Second Battle of El Alamein in the Egyptian desert during World War II. The battle involved troops from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and other countries. The MFO members took part in a moving ceremony that brought together all nations involved in the conflict and honored the soldiers on both sides of the battle. The MFO Director General’s Representative in Egypt, Egyptian officials, and Ambassadors and Defence Attachés from various countries also participated in the ceremony.

On Sunday, 31 October 2021, a delegation of 29 MFO members from the Australian, New Zealand, and United States contingents joined a heartfelt commemoration of the World War I battle of Beersheba and paid their respects to all those who fought there 104 years ago. Forces from the British, German, and Ottoman Empires were involved in the battle, including troops from Australia and New Zealand. “Those troopers of 1917 would be proud to see how the spirit of the ANZAC Mounted Division lives on today, more than 100 years later”, said Lieutenant-Colonel Brent Morris, the New Zealand Contingent Commander. Lieutenant-Colonel Tim Manton, the Australian Contingent Commander, provided an impromptu history lesson on the tradition of wearing emu plumes in the Royal Australian Armoured Corps to a group of young children. Also in attendance were the MFO Director General’s Representative in Israel, Israeli officials, and Ambassadors and Defence Attachés from numerous countries.
