MFO Remembrance Events 2022

MFO Sinai members participated in a series of solemn commemoration events at South and North Camp, and in Egypt and Israel, to honor and remember the Fallen who gave their lives in service for their countries and in support of peace.

On 22 October, an MFO delegation, including the Force Commander and our Director General's Representative in Cairo, joined Australian, British, Canadian, Egyptian, French, German, Greek, Italian, and Polish Military representatives among others, to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Second Battle of El Alamein. Standing together to pay respect to the Fallen with representatives from countries who used to face each other in war made attendees realize and appreciate the value of peace. On this somber occasion, Australia and New Zealand contingent members were honored with Catafalque Guard duties at the German memorial and Commonwealth El Alamein cemetery.

On 31 October, another MFO delegation, including the Director General's Representative in Israel, participated in a ceremony at Be’er-Sheva, Israel, for the 105th commemoration of the second-to-last cavalry charge in history, staged by the Australian Light Horse regiment. This charge marked a turning point in the region during World War I. The last charge was undertaken by the New Zealand Mounted Rifles two weeks later. A particular highlight of the ceremony was the ANZAC Catafalque Party comprising Australian and New Zealand contingent members at the Be’er-Sheva War Cemetery.

On Friday 11 November, MFO Sinai gathered to remember and honor both the Fallen and Veterans of battle on Remembrance (Armistice) Day. At the eleventh hour, MFO members paid respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in military conflicts during and since World War I, as well as those who lost their lives in the service of peace with the MFO.

On Saturday 12 November, the MFO commemorated the second anniversary of the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of seven MFO members in 2020. Their tragic loss is still deeply felt within the MFO and at home.

Among those honored on these days were Veterans and those who sacrificed greatly to protect and defend freedom and their homes. Many returned from these conflicts wounded in body and soul; too many never recovered from it.

On both 11 and 12 November, MFO members observed a minute of silence. We shall never forget the bravery and courage of those who went before us.
