NZ Minister of Defence Visit

Over the period 7 to 9 October 2022, the New Zealand Minister of Defence, the Honourable Peeni Henare, escorted by Rear Admiral James Gilmour (Commander Joint Forces New Zealand) and Mr. Greg Lewis (New Zealand Ambassador to Egypt), visited the MFO in Sinai with stops at South Camp, North Camp, and Remote Site 2. Following his visit, he met with the MFO’s Director General, Elizabeth Dibble, in Cairo along with her Representative, Mr. Bradley Lynch.

The Minister travelled to meet with deployed New Zealand (NZ) personnel, to learn more about the MFO, and to understand how the NZ presence contributed to the MFO mission. During the visit, the Minister received a strategic briefing from the MFO’s Force Commander, Major General Evan Williams, outlining the status of the current operational environment in Sinai along with other briefings on MFO activities.

There were many occasions to meet with NZ contingent members including a traditional welcome ceremony (Pōwhiri). These opportunities highlighted the range of the contingent’s involvement with and contribution to the MFO mission, such as their efforts in the area of Force Protection, the work undertaken by an Engineering surge team in and around South Camp, and that undertaken by the NZ electrician to install helicopter landing lights at North Camp. In addition, the Minister viewed the extensive development work completed under the management of the NZ Project Engineer at Remote Site 2 and the support provided by NZ drivers in Sinai.

The Minister commented that he was immensely proud of the Kiwi personnel serving in Sinai and their strong presence within the MFO. Their mana (pride) in being members of the MFO family and their commitment to peacekeeping in Sinai was evident when they performed the haka during the Pōwhiri. The Minister also remarked upon the role NZ contingent members undertake in training and developing other contingents’ skill sets. Their ability to disseminate knowledge and overcome cultural and language barriers plays an important role in improving and sustaining operations.
